Why do people still flock to Thailand? It is pretty clear for many people that stayed here then the magical first years that the Thai really only like the money we bring. First time visitors come back from Thailand with stars in their eyes but are soon taken brought back to earth when they see that if they do not pay over price the smile is gone. I do not think I have seen a genuine Thai smile for many years and I do not think I am alone.
The only time I see some smiling is when they do not know what to say when they know I am right but they do not want to argue.
The Visa rules are getting harder and owning your own house is very risky right now, so why do we actually keep staying in Thailand?
Even a drug smuggling ex death row English girl tried to come back to Thailand but for what reason? Â What did she miss so much here that she had to come back after her jail term in Thailand and UK? It could not be the nice prison and the corrupt court system?
Why don’t people just go to Cambodia or Laos? They talk about it in forums all over Thailand but they never do it. They keep staying in Thailand for reason beyond me.
Why do I stay in Thailand? I have actually no idea anymore and when I found out I probably don’t live here anymore. Why do you stay in Thailand? Let me know.

I guess they are used being at Thailand, that is why they tend to search for it. Even if they found and experience quite bad things at Thai, maybe,it can be called “inlove” at one place.

Miss anything?

I left Thailand about a year ago, after more than 5 years. I may go back because my family is Thai, but no other reason.
I think people come to Thailand because it is easier. I don’t see so many package deals to Cambodia or Vietnam – yet!
Thailand has more of a brand than the others – Thai massage, Thai food, Thai house, Thai pussy, silk etc but I don’t see any reason it will continue to be the case. Thailand succeeds in spite of the Thais, not because of them. In the past they have had little competition, but it is changing.

And you start smiling because you do not care anymore.

Good point, why do you want have problem when you want to relax?

One reason, the company sent me here for work! When my contract is up, the day I retire, it is surely not the place I want to be to fight with corrupt officials, hopeless rules designed only to maximize teamoney takings etc. I will retire somewhere I can relax! Btw, the climate and many good thai friends WOULD be a reason, but overall, nope!

I have absolutely no idea. Indonesia and Cambodia are both much better alternatives.
Waiting for a culmination in the red/yellow shirt situation largely.
Probably just too lazy to move until it gets much worse for foreigners living here. At the moment the xenophobia and discrimination is bearable. But you are totally correct. After about six months the smile and excitement of Thailand wears off.
