As many 300 police was deployed last night to curb and try bring back order to traffic. Hundreds of taxi meter drivers had blocked the roads around the airport creating a traffic jam in and around the airport.

The taxi drivers were mainly protesting against that one taxi driver was arrested for not putting on his meter on a drive to Pattaya. They where also angry the AOT allowing “ghost” taxis pick up passengers before the normal taxi stand and they were not charged the normal 50 THB but they paid 20 THB under the table to the AOT staff.

In all our years living in Thailand we never seen any taxi driver put on the meter when driving to Pattaya or to Provinces outside Bangkok. It’s more like a cool thing people do to just haul down a taxi give him 1000 to 2000 THB and drive you down to Pattaya. It must have been some stupid police wanted some extra money since the Thai police get commission for every ticket they give and its all ends up in the end of the month. Since it not the 26 of November he must been desperate.

All tourists that come to Thailand must have seen the flocks of “Authorized” staff jumping on you as soon as you come out from the airport terminal. They belong to the Thai Air and to the Airports of Thailand and they want you to take a limousine or van instead of a Taxi meter. You should just ignore them and take a normal taxi meter even if they tell you they are not any normal taxis left. Do not believe anything they say just go out to the taxi queue or end up paying triple the amount of money for same service.
