German caught with heroin

A German national was arrested at CKS International Airport on Sunday night and detained on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 3.1 kg of heroin into Taiwan, the Central News Agency reported. Airport police said they arrested Andreas Linek, 27, when they found the heroin in his suitcase after he flew in from Bangkok on a China Airlines flight. Linek told officers that he was approached in Thailand by a British citizen named Terry Sullivan and a Chinese man named “Dezzy” who paid him US$6,000 to deliver the heroin to a person in Taiwan. Andreas was remanded in custody and faces a maximum sentence of death for drug trafficking.

I know this person, but I did not know that he was this stupid. I met him for the first time in Lucifer, a techno club in Pat Pong. Because I am good customer, one of the waiters told me that the police was coming and he must have thought, “I did not want this guy to go through the “piss in the glass” routine”. He guessed right, and as I went to the exit, I saw this tall skinny guy raving away. My guess, he was on something so I told him to come outside with me. We met the Police coming up from the streets as we were going down. Andreas was very grateful and now I know why, he was selling Ecstasy in the club. If I have not told him that the police would have taken him for sure and maybe he would not be in Taiwan now but knowing Andreas, he probably ends up somewhere in jail sooner or later. We met a few times for lunch and some dancing but I was careful not to be too close or go to his home. If the police strikes and you are in the same apartment, you will have serious problem in Thailand even if you are not guilty of anything but just being there.

Thailand has a serious drug problem even if the normal tourists do not see it. People are careful not to lose face and show it in the open. You probably see less junkies here than in any normal big city. Nevertheless, the fact that the government could order a massive strike against drug dealers that left 2500 killed in just 2 month showed that there is a big drug problem in Thailand.

When this book is being published, the government launched “war against drugs II” and the body count is ticking rapidly. The government is also launching more and more frequently “piss in a glass in a bar” raids, so even if you took drugs in your home country you can be prosecuted according to Thailand law.

When I came here 6 years ago all the bars was open to 06.00 in the morning but after the new government took power, they took it down to 02.00. Some forces in the parliament trying to get it down to 00.00.  This is not a “tourist” or expat problem like many thinks. They just try to control the big problem they have within the Thai population. Personally, I do not believe in earlier closing times. It will just result in people going home taking drugs at private parties where it is going to be even harder to control.

Over the recent months, police have raided nightclubs on regular basis and forced every one in the club to take a pee test.  Remember bring your medical receipt here from your country if you are on prescription because the Thai drugs testing equipment will indicate drug use even for some common medicines. Also, remember that if you have taken some drugs or medicine in your own country or in another country, it will indicate drug use 3 weeks after you took it.  Some farrang come to Thailand and seem to think that this is a drug paradise but I can assure you its more risky to take drugs here than in most western countries. In addition, because Thailand have a “tell to get off easy” system people are more likely to rat you off. You can be sure that the Thai Police think its better white face in the newspapers than a common Thai face. Thailand also has undercover police officers working the normal tourist areas and they can offer you drugs and then arrest you for it after. This of course does not happened to normal 2 weeks tourists but people that are looking for this kind of trouble.

Never accept to take anyone’s luggage while traveling to or from Thailand, even if this is the love of you life you are stuck with the things you have in the bag for the rest of your life. A common trick the drug dealer use is to sell a small quantity of drugs to some backpackers going from Laos to Thailand. They will then rat on the police and while the police are busy fronting with you in the local press the drug dealers will take the big drug shipment across.

Use your common sense and remember that if convicted, you can face death penalty.
